Description

This is a heavy carrier starship. A hybrid battleship/starfighter carrier, it has a total of 18 launch bays for its complement of 400 fighters. It has another 18 launch bays dedicated for the release and recovery of dropships for planetary operations. At 2.26 kilometers in length, it is one of the largest ships in the Fleet (only superseded by the mighty, but significantly more expensive, supercarriers). Its vast interior holds extensive fighter maintenance facilities, including a construction bay capable of building new fighters or other combat-related materiel. It also has room to store 2 firebases, for deployment in more entrenched planetary operations. With a strong emphasis on combat, this class of ship is capable of extended engagements in hostile space, and is heavily armed and armored. As a result, it is cheaper to use and more capable in missions that require Fleet actions but cannot afford the use of a dedicated task force. These ships do not excel in their parent roles, but strike an effective, efficient, and sufficiently powerful balance of the two. They have a crew complement of 2100, and a Marine complement of 1000.

I also like to imagine these kinds of vessels, despite having a strong military feel, being of smart, ergonomic, and self-sufficient design, as opposed to the "sweating" look of ship interiors in Aliens and whatnot. I like to think of these ships having oxygen "gardens", for instance, where genetically engineered plants are contained in self-contained modules for easy swap-out, which generate all the oxygen (and food) you need. They would be green, cool, wet areas of the ship where the crew would go to relax, to remind themselves of more than just metal and plastic. Why not have a clean and green military starship?
